5 Wrong reasons to implement an employee incentive program
Business the world over are rushing to get their employee motivation programs, retention centric activities going on at full scale and across the entire organizations, but there is a likelihood that it is being done for wrong reasons instead of the right ones. Now that must have come as surprising to you, but the reason your employee incentive program even exists could be working in a totally different way against the way it was intended to be, here are the possible reasons why your employee incentive program is being done for the wrong reasons :
1. Your employee incentive program has no objectives: A program being conducted at your company without specific objectives has no reason to find a place in the roster of activities. If you don’t really know why you are implementing the program, you are better off not doing it. 2. Employee incentive program is just for a few important departments: An all-too common reason stated as the cause of attrition is the fact that the employees have expressed time and again that the department they have been working for has always been ignored. If you are running an employee incentive program and it isn’t company wide, this is again not a reason for you to run it in the first place. 3. Doing it because everyone else is doing it: If you are running your employee incentive program because it seems to be a cool thing to do or because you found your competitors doing it, it is another reason why you should not be running a program like this in your company for the simple reason that you are not aligning your programs with any specific objective other than peer pressure.
4. A one-time affair -- doing it because we face attrition problems: Like some companies get into a hyper-drive in their sales activity when the sales numbers have been abysmal, some companies resort to employee motivation programs or a full-length employee incentive program to try and quell their attrition problems. If this is why you have your program in place, it could be one of the reasons why you must not be running your employee incentive program. Because one time efforts like these can only waste your money rather than solve your problems. 5. We do It because it is our company policy to do so: The company founders have envisioned the need for such a program and that’s great news. However, you need to take that vision and give it the modern customized approach in tune with the present demands your business seems to be making on the system. If your employee incentive program has no such objectives in place and isn’t flexible enough to adapt itself to the requirements that change rapidly, you will have to take a hard look at the employee incentive program you have in place for your company.
A “me-to” approach to HR practices like training and development, employee retention programs isn’t going to give the company the competitive edge it requires to survive in the market place.
